Well here it is, my first blog entry. I've been working pretty hard on getting enough content put together to send this website out to the world wide web. I consider myself a fairly computer savvy guy considering we had a computer virtually the entire time I was growing up. In fact, I remember the first computer our family ever had; the stunning Kaypro II. Ah yes, for a mere $2200 (back in 1983) the Kaypro II featured two 5 1/4" floppy drives, an internal 9" monochrome (green) monitor, no hard drive, a whopping 64K of RAM, and a dot matrix printer. The keyboard would fold up and latch into the computer to form a lightweight 26 pound system to haul around. Cell phones today are more powerful than that machine, but it was my first introduction to the world of computers.
What I really loved about computers was the video games you could play on them. I never had an Atari, Nintendo, Sega or other gaming system growing up so I had to rely on what I could drum up on my computer. With the Kaypro, it was classics like Ladder (a Donkey Kong like game) and Catchum (like Pacman) that kept me interested. Later, we bought an IBM compatible 286 computer that featured a 20 MB hard drive, 1 MB of RAM, a mouse, and a color monitor. Could life get any better? I copied my friend's games like Lakers vs Celtics, Hardball, and The Oregon Trail and would play them whenever I wasn't outside shooting hoops, playing wiffleball, or doing my daily chores.
So what does all of that have to do with this website? Well, in order to play games (and copy them from my friends) I had to learn the DOS operating system and what commands did what. Trust me, I got in trouble from my Dad more than once after informing him I had typed in the fatal "del" command in the wrong directory which deleted vital boot up files. To this day I can jump onto a computer running on DOS and the command tags start flowing out of me. Learning an operating system and its commands is just like learning to do web design. There isn't a real "user friendly" setup with cute icons and menu items to nurse you along, you just have to flat know how to program in tags and codes. It's been a humbling, educational, and rewarding process that has required me to lean a lot on my brother's shoulder in order to pull off.
There you have, that's my intro. The blogs with feature rants of course on golf, but as you can see it could dive into the relics of childhood where I'll bust out a Kaypro II reference or other random topic. I'll also throw in some pics and try to do daily blogs when golf trippin' so that you can keep up with what is going on with the gurus. Hey who knows, maybe we'll hook up with you for a round of golf or meet at a buffet and you'll find yourself on the Guru's website!
