The Takeaway: This is an excellent Arnold Palmer design in the desert that uses the natural features well and carves a nice track out of what is otherwise a barren wasteland in the foothills of Las Vegas. It is situated near the Red Rock Canyon and surrounded by the beautiful Summerlin housing community. The seventh tee box offers a great panoramic view of the Las Vegas strip. As far as public golf courses go, Arroyo provides what you need, with rates below $100 during much of the year. You’re not going to get the bells and whistles of resort or country club golf, but if you want a fun track that’s in good shape, you’ll get that here. Grade C+

What to Expect: A few man-made water features make you feel like you’re elsewhere, but not for long as the desert waste areas are plentiful. The course isn’t terribly long, but Mr. Palmer uses multi-lobed bunkers in strategic places on nearly every hole that forces you to be hitting your spots to score well. The greens are in good shape and large enough that hitting greens in regulation shouldn’t be overly difficult. The greens are generally flat without major undulations. Large greens and flat putts abound.

Individual Hole Analysis
Signature Hole: 10th Hole – 414 Yard Par 4 – The Gurus’ favorite hole on the course has a three-tiered water feature visible off the tee with a narrow fairway beyond. A slight dogleg left sets this hole up for the player that can employ a draw with his mid-irons. The green is well-protected on either side so a high ball that lands soft is ideal.
Best Par 3: 14th Hole – 159 Yards – This short par-3 has greenside sand traps protecting the left side and right side. It requires a precision short iron off the tee to make par. Good luck.
Best Par 4: 6th Hole – 416 Yards – There is only about 150 yards of landing area here with desert waste area both long and short. The longest hitters could drive the ball right through the fairway, so a fairway metal or iron might be the choice for some. A good score is possible if you can run the ball right up to the end of the fairway about 300 yards from the tee. The green is quite accessible from there and a red number could be the result.
Best Par 5: 11th Hole – 497 Yards – A relatively short par-5, this is reachable in 2, but it will require two straight shots. There’s not much room to err right or left and fairway bunkers are placed evenly apart like large footprints on either side of the fairway all the way to the green. Stay in the middle of the fairway and you should be fine.
Birdie Time: 13th Hole – 411 Yard Par 4 – One of the wider fairways on the course allows you to swing away with minimal risk. A good drive will leave you with a short iron into the green. The shorter the iron, the better your chance at birdie. This may be the smallest green on the course, but it is quite accessible.
Bogey Beware: 4th Hole – 432 Yard Par 4 – This may be the obvious choice for the ‘Bogey Beware’ hole because it is the #1 handicap hole on the course, but the reality is that it is tough. Fairway bunkers make the tee shot quite intimidating. Driver may not be the best option here. Then again, getting a ball to finish on the green is probably just as difficult. The green is quite literally surrounded by massive greenside bunkers. The sensible play is to lay up and use your wedge to attempt to get up and down. Take your bogey and move on to the next hole.
