Rankings:

The Takeaway:  Routinely in the discussion as a top three course at Pinehurst's historic resort, No. 8 is Tom Fazio's lone design at the property and often discussed as one of the most fun. If you like the non-ocean holes at Spyglass Hill, you'll have a great time at No. 8.  Grade B+

What to Expect:  With No.4 being renovated by Gil Hanse, No.8 now stands as the lone Tom Fazio design at Pinehurst Resort. By most patrons standards, No.8 lies firmly in the top three courses of the nine featured at the Pinehurst; although the most recently acquired property that is now No.9 (formerly the private access National Golf Club) is garnering plenty of fans. For those that have played Spyglass Hill on the opposite coast, the inland holes share a similar look and feel to what No.8 delivers with towering pines, comparable bunkers, and similar terrain. While No.2 is by far the most difficult course at Pinehurst, No.8 features more fun in the design while being far from a pushover. Fazio always boasts an impressive balance and variety in his designs and you’ll find the same thing here. In fact, if there was a course I had to play everyday at Pinehurst then No.8 would be a top contender to consider. While your friends will almost certainly only ask if you played No.2 on your visit to the famed resort, you would be amiss to skip out on No.8.

Individual Hole Analysis

Signature Hole:  18th Hole – 445 Yard Par 4 – The final hole ascends to a greensite set near the base of the iconic southern style clubhouse that frames the visuals for this hole. The tee shot plays over a pond to a fairway flanked on the left by a bunker. The wave in the middle of the fairway can create an uphill or downhill lie unless you fly it all the way to the flat spot. A trio of bunkers protect the right-to-left sloping green with a distinct tier in it which demands players stay on top of their game all the way home.

Best Par 3:  8th Hole – 236 Yards – A long tee shot is required on this attractive par three that is the final one-shotter on the front nine. The wise play is up the left side away from the long, deep bunker on the right side and water hazard that is further right than that. Missing the green to the left also affords a pitch shot back into the slope of the green where you can be aggressive and get it close. Par here is a very strong score.

Best Par 4:  14th Hole – 404 Yards –
