Rankings:
The Takeaway: Sagamore stands as one of the most disappointing Jack Nicklaus courses I’ve played. The design is uninspired, the residential setting cliche, and routing forgettable. It’s better than a lot of public courses in Indiana but falls short of expectations for a private course with the Golden Bear’s name on it. Grade C

What to Expect: Jack Nicklaus’ design at The Sagamore Club is a bunker laden routing located just north of Indianapolis. The holes travel through a residential development with housing coming into view, and sometimes into play, on most of the holes. A majority of the holes are flat while a few of them have mild elevation changes between the tee and green. Trees rarely are a factor on the mostly open layout while water comes into play a several times including on most of the par threes. Conditioning is good but not outstanding and the finishing holes represent three of the best on the entire property. In the end, the developers of Sagamore seemed more concerned about selling lots and homes then they did creating an amazing golf course. That being said, Nicklaus always does a solid job; however Sagamore will never be mistaken as one of the Golden Bear’s finest efforts.
